On Wednesday I had a Librarian meeting to attend. Dr. Truitt, Assistant Superintendent, came to talk to us – as she was leaving I asked if she would mind a picture to post.
I like the way the picture came out. Thank you Dr. Truitt!!
On my way back to school I stopped off at In-’N-Out Burger for lunch. I asked one of the cashiers to take this photo.

At the beginning of the school year the students of Picture Rocks were challenged to a reading challenge. The rules were simple: earn 17,000 points in the course of the school year through the Accelerated Reader program and Mr. Hall would shave his head bald. Do it before February 15th (Love of Reading week) and Mr. Hall will have it shaved into a Mohawk for a week. Each week Mr. Hall would present to the classes during their Library instructional time the progress the student body had made on the goal. We watched as the goal began to dwindle down to a few thousand points. We drew in our breath the last week of the challenge, unsure whether or not it would become a reality. And then . . . the shears began! In a school-wide assembly Mrs. Walker & Mrs. Coronado began the preparations to sculpt the ‘hawk. Congratulations to the student body of PRI for their hard work!

Welcome back to an exciting second semester. We have many events planned; Awards Assemblies, Love of Reading Week, Evening Under the Stars, and Title I Parents Night, to name a few. Please look for flyers with updates in the monthly newsletters and the updated web page for dates and times.
I want to thank all parents and families for the support at the end of the first semester. We had excellent turn-out for the music concerts, classroom holiday events, and the Santa’s workshop. The students beamed with pride as they performed to standing room only crowds.
Tax donations rolled in at a steady pace and are greatly appreciated. The money will be used to supplement our after-school programs and fund special field trips.
A reminder that we are at the mid-point of the year, and this is a very important time for parents to support their child academically. Research shows that a child’s grades usually dip down a bit in third quarter. Teachers will be sending the standards based report home this first week. Students that are not making sufficient progress will be receiving the warning retention letters. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
We are looking forward to the school spelling bee that will be held on Friday, January 11th. Our winners will represent us at the District Spelling Bee on Wednesday, January 23rd.

Mohawk Challenge December 17, 2007

We are nearing the conclusion of our Mohawk Challenge. The students of Picture Rocks have been challenged to earn 17,000 points this school year. If they are able to complete this task, Mr. Hall will shave his head. IF they are able to reach this amount by February 15th, Mr. Hall will sport a Mohawk before shaving his head bald. An extra day will be added to the length of the Mohawk for each week that the students earn over 1,000 points. (Right now it is sitting at 8 school days for the Mohawk).
The students of Picture Rocks have already earned 12,000 points! (The most ever by this time of the year!). There is now less than 5,000 points needed!!!
Be sure to check back here later, as pictures will be taken of the Mohawk (and the reaction from everywhere that Mr. Hall goes).
Under the Stars & Technology Night December 5, 2007

Join us for a night of star gazing and Science! In January, on Thursday, January 17, we will be holding a special night event dedicated to Science and Technology. On this night we will have Star gazing (with the help of the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association), technology activities in the Tech Center, a family game challenge in the Media Center, a catapult challenge and a building contest in the cafeteria. We will also have examples of Science Fair and Invention convention projects from the past. More information will come out in January!
